This was more like an exploration of how they can be reduced to their simplest forms. I enjoyed leaving so much of the canvas untouched, allowing the space to exist alongside the small gestures of colour and line. The yachts became almost symbolic, recognisable without being precisely described creating is an unusual balance here between order and spontaneity: structured rows and deliberate lines against loose, imperfect marks. At this stage, I was becoming increasingly interested in how little I needed to paint to complete the image themselves.
